NO JAIL FOR EX-SOLDIER WHO POSSESSED 'DEPRAVED' IMAGES AND VIDEOS OF BABY AND CHILDREN
A former Irish soldier found in possession of “depraved” sexual images and videos of children has been sentenced to a suspended jail term by a judge in Limerick.Cormac Browne, aged 23 and residing in Camas, Newcastle West, Co Limerick, admitted to owning explicit images of minors, including a disturbing photograph of an adult engaging in a sexual act with a baby.
At the time of the offense, Browne was nearly 21 years old.
He also pleaded guilty to recording live online video chats in which he engaged in sexually explicit conduct with preteen girls.
Gardaí discovered the child exploitation material during a raid on his residence on April 9th, 2023.
Judge Simon McAleese praised the Gardaí for their “excellent work” in arresting Browne and uncovering his “disgraceful” and “depraved” actions.
During the sentencing hearing at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court, Det Garda Orlaith Ryan explained that authorities received a tip from the US-based International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children about a Snapchat account associated with Browne, which had uploaded a sexually explicit image of a child.
Prosecutor Lily Buckley added that Snapchat identified the image as illegal content, leading to the account being shut down.
Gardaí searched Browne’s home and seized electronic devices.
A forensic analysis of a mobile phone uncovered four images and two videos of a sexual nature involving children.
Browne was interviewed by gardaí, where he admitted to the existence of the Snapchat account that attracted international attention.
He explained that he received and was shocked by an unsolicited explicit video, which he saved and later shared with another person.
Defence barrister Joe McMahon requested leniency, highlighting Browne’s military background, including a tour of duty in Lebanon and his voluntary discharge.
The judge stated that Browne’s “depraved” activities and manipulation of vulnerable children reflected a clear awareness of his wrongdoing.
He also noted Browne’s resignation from the Irish Army, which was a self-inflicted consequence, and dismissed this as irrelevant to sentencing.
The court recognized that, although the victims were unknown to Browne, a significant factor in such crimes is the existence of a market for paedophilic content.
Browne received concurrent sentences of three years on four charges possession, production, use, and attending to child abuse material but the judge reduced these to 18 months, suspending them for three years on condition.
In addition, Browne was ordered to be assessed for 240 hours of community service instead of serving the full 18 months in prison, particularly for producing child abuse images during a live video chat with underage girls.
He agreed to this condition, provided he is suitable for community service, which the probation service had rated as “moderate risk” of reoffending.
