“He Broke Me Completely”: Victim Reveals Her Nightmare Relationship With a ‘Charming’ Abuser A Dundee mum has bravely spoken out about the year of terror she endured at the hands of an ex-partner who, behind a charming smile, hid a dark and violent side.The victim says what started as a whirlwind romance soon turned into a nightmare of control, manipulation, and abuse.
> “At first he was kind, attentive, and made me feel special,” the victim recalls.
“But once he had me where he wanted me, everything changed.” Soon after they began dating, his behaviour grew increasingly volatile.
He would call her vile names, accuse her of things she hadn’t done, and twist every argument to make her feel to blame.
What began as emotional cruelty escalated into terrifying physical assaults.
> “He hit me, locked me in rooms, and took my phone so I couldn’t leave or get help,” she says.
“I felt completely trapped.” At the time, the victim was struggling with postnatal depression and severe health issues that left her hospitalised several times.
Instead of showing care, her partner shouted at her and left her to suffer.
“He saw me sick on the floor and just walked away,” she says quietly.
Her child eventually had to go and live with her parents because the home was no longer safe.
Despite multiple attempts to leave, the abuser always found ways to pull her back in — promising he’d change, crying, and convincing her that no one else would ever want her.
He refused to work, relying on her for money while secretly seeing other women.
> “He was living a double life.
When I found out he’d been cheating on me the whole time, I was devastated,” the victim says.
“Even then, he came crying to me while another woman was upstairs in his bed.” In March this year, things reached breaking point when an argument turned violent.
The victim says he pinned her to the floor and refused to let her go.
That was the moment she finally found the strength to go to the police.
The man later pleaded guilty under Scotland’s Domestic Abuse Act.
While he was fitted with an electronic tag, the victim feels the punishment does not reflect the trauma she’s endured.
> “He’s destroyed my confidence, my health, and my peace of mind,” she says.
“I’m still scared to leave my house.
Every day I’m trying to rebuild, but the damage he caused is something I’ll carry forever.” Despite everything, the victim is determined to speak out — hoping that by sharing her story, other victims will find the courage to seek help before it’s too late.
> “If my story helps even one person escape the way I did,” she says, “then it’s worth it.”
