DUNMOW MAN COLIN GRANT SENTENCED FOR ONLINE CHILD ABUSE AND REPREHENSIBLE VIDEOS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Dunmow and the surrounding areas, Colin Grant, aged 51, of Leaden Close, Leaden Roding, was found guilty of heinous crimes involving the exploitation and abuse of children through online platforms. The case, which came to light in November 2017, revealed a pattern of disturbing behavior that spanned over a year, involving the streaming of live abuse and possession of extremely graphic and illegal images.Grant, a former employee of the Foreign Office and a director of the computer training company Harper Grant Ltd, used sophisticated tactics to lure underage boys into sexual activities via the internet. Under a false identity, he posed as a teenage girl on Skype, engaging with 13 boys aged between 13 and 15, convincing them to perform acts on camera. His manipulative methods included pretending to have technical issues with his webcam and coaxing the victims into sending explicit videos and images.
The investigation, led by Essex Police, uncovered that Grant’s online activities extended beyond mere chat. On May 19, 2016, authorities received intelligence indicating that a user was discussing child sexual abuse and sharing indecent images with an undercover officer. The evidence suggested that Grant was accessing live abuse material from another country, which was streamed during his online sessions.
In addition to his online grooming, Grant posed as a girl named Sally Moll on chat services like Omegle, where he continued to manipulate young boys into sexual conversations. He would persuade victims to switch to Skype, claiming technical difficulties with his camera, and then proceed to send them images. His chats included explicit messages such as “Want to show me your willy? I wish you would show me a video,” which further exemplifies his predatory behavior.
Authorities identified 13 victims through these online interactions, with 12 located in the United States and one in the United Kingdom. During a detailed search of Grant’s devices, police discovered a horrifying collection of indecent images and videos. Among these were some depicting the rape of newborn babies, a level of depravity that shocked even seasoned investigators. Prosecutor Marc Brown QC described the material as “the worst imaginable images,” including footage of infants so young that they could not walk, being subjected to sexual abuse.
The evidence also revealed a disturbing focus on a particular young girl, whose images spanned from her age of four to six years old. As she aged in the photographs, her appearance showed signs of neglect and abuse—dirty clothes, unkempt hair, and blemished skin. The sequence included a distressing image where she was made to hold a sign with a date, confirming ongoing abuse.
In court, Judge Patricia Lynch QC emphasized that Grant’s personal hardships did not mitigate the severity of his crimes. She stated, “When you cross the Rubicon from viewing material to actively contacting children, the seriousness of the offence escalates.” The judge highlighted that the victims believed they were communicating with peers or adolescents, which made the betrayal even more egregious. She also acknowledged Grant’s family’s suffering but underscored her duty to impose a deterrent sentence to protect children from such predatory behavior.
Ultimately, Colin Grant was sentenced to five years and six months in prison for 18 separate offences, including sexual activity with minors and possession of indecent images. His case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
