CLIVE UPTON FROM CHILDWALL ESCAPES PRISON AFTER INDECENT IMAGE SCANDAL IN LIVERPOOL
In a case that has shocked the local community of Childwall and the wider Liverpool area, former Deyes High School assistant head, Dr. Clive Upton, was recently spared a custodial sentence after admitting to serious charges involving the possession and attempted distribution of indecent images of minors.Upton, aged 51 and residing on Dunbabin Road in Childwall, was found to have used a digital camera to capture photographs of young girls exercising within the confines of a school gymnasium. This disturbing revelation was brought to light during proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, where the court heard detailed accounts of his offenses.
Upton, a man who had been a familiar face at the Maghull school for three decades and a regular attendee at church, pleaded guilty to multiple charges. Specifically, he admitted to two counts of attempting to take indecent photographs of children, with these acts occurring between November 2002 and April 13 of the previous year. Additionally, he confessed to nine separate offenses involving the downloading of indecent images of children, with these activities taking place from May 1, 2003, up until April 13 of the following year.
Prosecutor Brendan Carville outlined the circumstances leading to Upton’s arrest, revealing that the teacher’s apprehension was linked to a broader investigation into the distribution of child pornography. The case was initiated after authorities identified a man from the Midlands who was caught distributing such illicit images. During the investigation, law enforcement officials discovered Upton’s email address on the suspect’s computer. A subsequent forensic examination of Upton’s personal computer uncovered a staggering collection of 260 indecent images depicting children aged between eight and thirteen.
During police interviews, Upton admitted that he had engaged in swapping pornography over the internet with other individuals who shared similar interests. He claimed that the images he possessed had been received unsolicited and that he did not actively seek them out. Despite the gravity of the charges, Judge Bryn Holloway considered the possibility of sending Upton to prison but ultimately decided against it. The judge expressed the view that Upton appeared to recognize the severity of his actions and the issues he faced.
As part of his sentencing, Upton was ordered to participate in a sex offenders’ treatment program and was required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of five years. Furthermore, he was prohibited from working with children for the same duration. In light of these circumstances, Upton resigned from his position at the school, which paid him an annual salary of approximately £65,000.
Judge Holloway emphasized that while prison was considered, the community order was deemed appropriate given Upton’s acknowledgment of his problems and the steps he was mandated to undertake. The case has left a lasting impact on the community, raising concerns about safeguarding and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
