WINCHESTER VERGER CLIVE MCCLEESTER JAILED FOR ABUSE OF TEENAGERS AT CATHEDRAL AND SCHOOL

In a significant development in the fight against historic child abuse, Clive McCleester, a 77-year-old man from Winchester, has been sentenced to a total of sixteen years in prison following his guilty plea to multiple charges of sexual misconduct involving teenage boys. The sentencing took place at Inner London Crown Court on Monday, 10 July, marking the culmination of a thorough and relentless investigation into allegations that spanned over four decades.

McCleester, who served as a verger at Southwark Cathedral and also worked as a child welfare officer at Tylney Hall School in Hampshire, was found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency with a minor. His crimes involved two teenage boys, both of whom were subjected to sexual abuse during different periods and locations. The first victim, whose identity remains protected, was between 13 and 15 years old at the time of the abuse. The offences against him occurred between January 1969 and April 1971, while he was residing at the school’s boarding facility, where McCleester was employed as a welfare officer.

During that period, McCleester was responsible for the care of the victim following the death of his grandmother. The abuse took place at McCleester’s private residence within the school premises. The victim disclosed his traumatic experiences to police after confiding in a counselor, but tragically, he passed away in August 2020 before the case could reach its final resolution. His family attended the court proceedings in his absence to represent his interests and seek justice.

The second victim, also around 13 years old at the time, came forward later to reveal that he had been abused by McCleester at Southwark Cathedral between January 1984 and May 1987. At that time, he was a chorister at the cathedral, and McCleester held the position of Head Verger. The abuse occurred at McCleester’s flat, which was located within the vicarage of the cathedral. This second victim’s courage in coming forward helped to establish a pattern of predatory behavior spanning many years and different settings.

Throughout the court proceedings, McCleester admitted to the charges, acknowledging his misconduct. The judge sentenced him to eight years in prison for the initial set of offences, with an additional eight years on licence, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision after his release. The case highlights the importance of persistent investigations into historical abuse allegations, especially those involving trusted figures within religious and educational institutions. The community in Winchester and beyond is reminded of the devastating impact such abuse has on victims and the necessity of holding offenders accountable, regardless of the passage of time.
