CLIVE KIRBY FROM BROUGH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AT WELTON WATERS
In October 2013, a disturbing case emerged involving Clive Kirby, a 50-year-old man from Brough, who was convicted of grooming and engaging in sexual activities with a teenage girl at a well-known East Yorkshire beauty spot. The incident has raised serious concerns among parents and local residents about safety and vigilance in public spaces.Kirby, who resided on Ruskin Way in Brough, had established a troubling relationship with the 15-year-old girl. Over a period of time, he bombarded her with up to 200 text messages daily, gradually grooming her for inappropriate encounters. The grooming culminated in sexual activity taking place at Welton Waters, a popular outdoor leisure area near Brough, which is often frequented by families and young people.
The case took a further sinister turn when, weeks later, Kirby’s wife discovered him engaging in sexually inappropriate behavior with the girl inside their own home. This revelation added a new layer of gravity to the case, highlighting the extent of Kirby’s misconduct.
Kirby’s criminal history includes a previous conviction for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old, which underscores a pattern of predatory behavior. His latest conviction resulted in a four-year prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of four counts of sexual activity with a child.
The mother of the victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous for legal reasons, expressed her distress and concern. She emphasized the importance of parental vigilance, stating, “I would urge other parents to be aware of the dangers and to be vigilant. My child was too frightened to tell us the whole story.” She further explained that her daughter was initially taken to what appeared to be a safe environment but was ultimately exploited in a place that should have been secure.
She added, “Parents need to understand that this can happen anywhere. That man preyed on a vulnerable young person. She has lost her confidence as a result. She is very relieved he has been locked up and will not be out there walking the streets.”
Kirby’s actions and subsequent conviction serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and remaining alert to the potential dangers lurking in familiar settings. The case continues to resonate within the community, prompting calls for increased awareness and protective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
