IREBY MAN CLIVE CALVERT SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES IN CARLISLE COURT
In a case that has shocked the local community of Ireby and the wider region, Clive Calvert, a 39-year-old resident of Ireby, was sentenced in Carlisle Crown Court for his involvement in downloading and possessing a large collection of illegal images depicting child sexual abuse. The court heard that between July 2016 and June 2017, Calvert engaged in the illicit activity, accumulating hundreds of such images over this period.During the proceedings, it was revealed that nearly 200 of the more than 1,000 images found on his devices were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of illegal content. The court was informed that Calvert faced six charges in total, including three counts of making indecent images, one charge of possession, and two counts related to extreme pornographic images involving animals. Additionally, he was found to possess 141 prohibited pictures, which further compounded the severity of his offences.
Calvert, when questioned by police, claimed that he had not viewed most of the images he had downloaded. Despite his assertions, the court noted the heinous nature of the material involved. It was also highlighted that Calvert had a history of good character prior to these offences and had sought help to address his problematic behaviour.
Recorder Julie Clemitson described the images as “heinous,” emphasizing the gravity of the crimes committed. However, after considering mitigation and Calvert’s circumstances, she decided to suspend a 12-month prison sentence, opting instead for a two-year supervision period. As part of his sentence, Calvert is required to complete a rehabilitation program and undertake 120 hours of unpaid community service.
Furthermore, he is mandated to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register and adhere to a strict sexual harm prevention order for the next ten years. These measures are intended to monitor and restrict his activities to prevent any future offending, reflecting the serious concern the court has regarding his actions and their impact on the community of Ireby and beyond.
