SOUTH SHIELDS WRESTLING COACH CHRISTOPHER ROME JAILED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH A CHILD
A sick wrestling coach who groomed and abused a young child has been jailed.
Christopher Rome, of Lawrence Avenue, South Shields, admitted sexual communication with a child, meeting a child following sexual grooming, and five counts of sexual activity with a child.
He received a 64-month prison sentence for grooming and sexual activity with a child.
The court heard he made sexual references in messages, and the victim confided in her mother, leading to Rome’s conviction.
The girl expressed feeling under his "spell" at the time and suffering anxiety afterward, while her family reported she became secretive and self-harmed.
Rome was made subject to restrictions under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order for ten years, and will be subject to lifetime registration as a sex offender.
