CHRISTOPHER JONES FROM BRIERLEY HILL JAILED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In February 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving a charity worker from Brierley Hill who was sentenced to prison after being found in possession of nearly 4,300 indecent photographs depicting boys. The individual, identified as 68-year-old Christopher Jones, was convicted of multiple charges related to the creation and possession of these illicit images.During the court proceedings at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Recorder Thomas Rochford addressed Jones directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions given his background working with children. The judge remarked, "You should have realised, working with children, the gravity of what you were doing." It was revealed that among the nearly 4,300 images, 330 fell into the most severe category, indicating the images were particularly disturbing and sinister. The court noted that Jones had employed software tools on his computer in an apparent attempt to hide his activities, which suggested a conscious effort to conceal the illicit material.
Jones’s history of working with children, specifically helping them improve their reading skills, was highlighted during the trial. The court underscored that such a background should have provided him with an understanding of child abuse and the serious implications of his actions. Despite his prior involvement with children, Jones admitted to three charges of making indecent images of children and was subsequently sentenced to eight months in prison. Additionally, he was placed under a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting his future conduct and access to children.
Prosecutor Caroline Harris informed the court that there was no evidence to suggest Jones had engaged in direct abuse or grooming of children. She clarified that Jones, who must also register as a sex offender for the next decade, had told police that all the images involved boys and that he had no interest in girls. Jones explained that his interest in the images had been a result of a gradual escalation, stating that "one thing led to another," and claimed he had attempted to delete the images because he could no longer bear to watch children being harmed. He expressed remorse, saying, "I knew I should not have done it. I have only got myself to blame. Everything I had has been lost now."
The court was informed that Jones had been downloading these images over a period of approximately 12 months. Despite reports describing him as a desperately lonely man, the judge made it clear that his personal circumstances did not warrant avoiding immediate custody. The case underscores the serious consequences faced by individuals involved in the possession of child exploitation material, especially those with a background working with vulnerable children.
