CHRISTOPHER EAST FROM WIVENHOE SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN CHELMSFORD
In a case that has shocked the community of Wivenhoe, Christopher East, aged 33, faced the consequences of his involvement with child pornography after he voluntarily sought assistance, leading to his arrest and subsequent court proceedings.According to court records, police officers discovered a disturbing collection of indecent images on East's computer during a routine check. The investigation revealed a total of 176 illicit images, with 16 classified as more serious due to their explicit content. Among these, one particular image depicted a young girl approximately five years old, highlighting the severity of the material involved.
The court was informed that East's decision to reach out for help was a pivotal factor in the case. It was revealed that he contacted the community health team, which, upon assessing his situation, alerted law enforcement authorities. This proactive step ultimately led to the police visiting East's residence in Broome Grove, Wivenhoe, on July 2 of the previous year.
During the hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, East pleaded guilty to nine charges related to the creation of indecent images and one charge of possession. His admission of guilt was considered during sentencing, which resulted in a four-month jail term, suspended for two years. Additionally, East was subjected to a two-year supervision order, requiring him to participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program administered by the probation service.
Furthermore, the court imposed strict restrictions on East's future conduct. He is now prohibited from accessing internet pornography sites for life, and he is permanently barred from working with children. As part of his sentence, East was also placed on the sex offenders' register for a period of seven years, and police are granted the authority to conduct periodic checks of his residence to ensure compliance.
Judge Rodger Hayward Smith QC addressed East directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions. He stated, "It is serious stuff, and it is appalling stuff. To see a child as young as five says it all." Despite the severity of the case, the judge acknowledged East's cooperation and full confession, which earned him some credit in the sentencing process.
In mitigation, Nicola May, representing East, highlighted that he was actively seeking help to prevent any recurrence of such behavior. The court's decision reflects both the seriousness of the offense and the efforts made by East to address his issues, underscoring the importance of safeguarding children and maintaining community safety.
