CHRISTOPHER COPE FROM SANDIACRE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES IN DERBY
In September 2021, a disturbing case unfolded involving Christopher Cope, a man residing in Sandiacre, who faced serious criminal charges related to his past sexual misconduct. The case was heard at Derby Crown Court, revealing the tragic consequences of his actions and the profound impact on his personal life.According to court proceedings, Christopher Cope, aged 60, was publicly ostracized by his family after he admitted to sexually abusing an underage girl. The court heard that Cope had engaged in inappropriate conduct with the young victim, which included making her touch his private parts and doing the same to her. These acts took place several years prior, during which the girl was below the age of consent. It was only in January of the same year that she finally found the courage to confide in her mother about what had happened.
Prosecutor Abigail Joyce detailed the emotional revelation, stating that the girl returned from a friend's house and, when asked by her mother if she was alright, hesitated before replying that she couldn't tell her. The mother, sensing something was wrong, pressed further, and the girl eventually disclosed that something bad had happened to her. She then revealed the details of the abuse inflicted by Christopher Cope, who was formerly of Mountfield Avenue, Sandiacre. Following this disclosure, the police were contacted, leading to Cope's arrest.
During the court hearing, Cope pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. He admitted that the acts had made him "sexually aroused". The court was informed of the severe repercussions he faced as a result of his actions. His defense lawyer, Stefan Fox, highlighted the social stigma that would follow Cope for the rest of his life, emphasizing that he would be a registered sex offender. Fox explained that Cope had lost everything—his marriage, his family’s trust, and his previous standing in the community. Currently, Cope lives alone in a static caravan, working as a self-employed electrician. His daily routine involves getting up, going to work, and returning to his modest residence, a stark contrast to his former life.
Judge Shaun Smith QC sentenced Cope to three years and four months in prison. In his remarks, the judge acknowledged Cope's age and previously clean criminal record, but emphasized that his good character had been overshadowed by his recent actions. The judge pointed out the significant age difference between Cope and his young victim, which added to the gravity of the case. Additionally, Cope was handed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and will remain on the sex offender register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further harm.
This case underscores the devastating effects of sexual offenses on victims and the lasting consequences for offenders. It also highlights the importance of justice and the protective measures in place to safeguard vulnerable individuals from abuse.
