CHRISTOPHER COATES FROM SOUTH SHIELDS SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN GATESHEAD
In a case that has shocked the local community, Christopher Coates, a resident of South Shields, was convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl from Gateshead. The incident came to light after DNA evidence conclusively linked him to the unborn child of the underage victim, leading to a significant legal outcome.
The case dates back to July 2016, when Coates was accused of engaging in sexual activity with a minor girl he had met online.
The Newcastle Crown Court heard that the girl, who was a virgin before their encounter, was manipulated and groomed by Coates, who targeted her through internet communications.
Prosecutor Jonathan Devlin revealed that the girl confided that she engaged in sexual acts with Coates because she believed it was necessary to maintain his interest, stating, “She said she had sex because she thought the defendant wouldn’t speak to her if she didn’t.” The girl also described Coates as being moody and huffy, yet she expressed that she liked him.
When the girl became pregnant, Coates, who had not used any form of contraception, instructed her to terminate the pregnancy.
He claimed during police interviews that he had no involvement in her pregnancy, denying any sexual contact.
However, scientific testing later proved otherwise.
Samples taken from the girl were sent for DNA analysis, which confirmed that Coates was the biological father of the fetus.
This evidence was pivotal in the case, leading to his guilty plea on two counts of sexual activity with a child and meeting a child following sexual grooming.
Following his conviction, Coates, aged 27 at the time, was sentenced to six years in prison.
The court also ordered him to register as a sex offender for life and to comply with a sexual harm prevention order.
During the sentencing, Mr.
Recorder Simon Jackson QC emphasized the predatory nature of Coates’s actions, stating, “You deliberately contacted and targeted her.
These offences were driven by your selfish, predatory and ultimately reckless behaviour.” He further acknowledged the distress caused to the victim, noting, “One can reasonably judge and infer it must have been upsetting and distressing for her to undergo a termination in these circumstances.” In mitigation, Coates’s defense attorney, David Callan, highlighted that his client has shown remorse, having attempted to hang himself while in custody on remand.
Coates has since accepted full responsibility for his actions.
The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers of online grooming and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from exploitation, especially in communities like South Shields and Gateshead where such incidents have profound impacts.
