CHRISTOPHER CHAN GROOMS TEENAGE GIRL IN SOUTHPORT AND LEADS TO TRAUMA
In April 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving a 34-year-old man named Christopher Chan, who committed serious sexual offenses against a 15-year-old girl in Southport. The incident unfolded when Chan, employed as a waiter at Lings On Kings, a Chinese restaurant located on King Street in Southport, took the young girl back to his flat after a social encounter.
During this visit, Chan engaged in sexual activity with the girl, who was under the age of consent.
The court heard that on two separate occasions, he had provided her with alcohol, further complicating the situation and highlighting the manipulative nature of his actions.
The girl, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was persuaded by Chan to engage in sexual intercourse, an act that has had profound and lasting effects on her life.
On Friday, April 22, Liverpool Crown Court was presented with an impact statement from the girl, revealing the severe emotional and psychological toll the incident has taken on her.
She described how Chan’s grooming and sexual coercion disrupted her academic life, causing her to shift from excellent grades to poor performance, which ultimately jeopardized her chances of attending Cambridge University.
The trauma led her to self-harm and to attempt an overdose, and she has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
She is currently on medication to manage her condition.
The girl expressed her feelings of betrayal and mistrust, stating, “I now have trust issues with men, worrying they want to take advantage of me for their own needs.” Her testimony underscored the devastating impact of Chan’s actions on her mental health and future prospects.
Christopher Chan was found guilty of four counts related to engaging in sexual activity with a child, including acts involving penetration.
The court heard that he was aware of her age and that she was under the legal age of consent at the time of the offenses.
Despite this, he continued his inappropriate conduct.
Judge David Aubrey, QC, sentenced Chan to three years in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes and the breach of trust involved.
The judge also ordered Chan to be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for life, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
