CHRISTOPHER CHAMPION SENTENCED IN DEAL FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE

In a case that has shocked the community of Deal, a man named Christopher Champion has been sentenced to a significant prison term after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young girl over two decades ago. The incident, which only came to light after the victim chose to speak out, has brought to the forefront the long-lasting impact of childhood abuse and the importance of justice.

Champion, who was 16 years old at the time of the abuse, began molesting the girl when she was approximately eight years old. The abuse persisted over a period of time, with the victim remaining silent initially due to fear and concern about repercussions. It was only after the death of her mother and grandparents that she felt able to report the crimes to the authorities, revealing the harrowing details of her ordeal.

The victim, now an adult, recounted her experience in court, describing how she froze during the abuse. She testified that Champion attempted to rape her on one occasion and, on another, he actually succeeded in raping her. Her testimony was marked by emotional distress, but she demonstrated remarkable courage in sharing her story. Prosecutor Paul Valder described her account as “harrowing” and emphasized that her silence for many years was driven by fear.

Throughout her life, she had confided in partners about her childhood abuse but had not previously identified her attacker. Her decision to report the matter officially was motivated by a desire to confront her past and seek justice. She explained that she had been unable to speak out earlier because her mother and grandparents were alive, and she felt it was not the right time. Now, as an adult, she was “clearing the decks” and seeking closure.

Champion, who resides in Diana Gardens, Deal, denied the charges of rape, attempted rape, and four counts of indecent assault. He claimed he did not find the victim attractive and was puzzled as to why she would fabricate such allegations. However, following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court, he was convicted of all charges except rape.

Judge David Griffith-Jones QC addressed Champion directly during sentencing, condemning his actions as “regular and systematic” abuse. The judge described the victim’s testimony as “harrowing” and acknowledged the profound psychological harm inflicted. He praised the victim for her resilience and courage in coming forward and giving evidence, noting that her bravery was commendable.

Judge Griffith-Jones emphasized the importance of justice, stating that “a sentence of some length is demanded” and that “nothing less will do.” Champion was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. Additionally, his name will be entered onto the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.

This case underscores the devastating effects of childhood sexual abuse and highlights the importance of giving victims the strength to come forward, even many years after the events occurred. The community of Deal is left to reflect on the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
