CHRISTOPHER CAMBRAY SHREWLEY POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN WARWICKSHIRE

In July 2016, the case of Christopher Cambray, a former police officer from Shrewley, Warwickshire, took a significant turn as his appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, reaffirming his status as a danger to the public, particularly to children. The senior judges overseeing the case emphasized the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses.

Cambray, aged 43 at the time, had previously pleaded guilty to a series of heinous offences involving child sexual abuse and the possession of indecent images. His criminal activities spanned several years, during which he engaged in inappropriate and illegal conduct that shocked the local community and the wider public. His crimes included paying a young boy for sexual services, engaging in sexual activity with a child, and possessing indecent photographs of minors.

The court proceedings in Birmingham Crown Court revealed that Cambray’s offences were not isolated incidents but part of a prolonged pattern of predatory behavior. His actions were committed over a number of years, and he demonstrated little remorse or empathy for his victims. The judges noted that his conduct showed a blatant disregard for the harm caused and the impact on the victims involved.

In a ruling delivered on July 8, the Court of Appeal dismissed Cambray’s challenge to his sentence, which had been handed down in November of the previous year. The original sentence consisted of four years and two months in prison, along with an extended five-year licence period. The judges, including Judge Martyn Zeidman QC, stated that there was ample evidence to support the conclusion that Cambray was a significant risk of causing serious harm to children in the future.

Judge Zeidman emphasized that Cambray’s offences had taken place over an extended period and that he had shown little understanding of the damage inflicted on his victims. The court upheld the original sentence, affirming that it was appropriate given the circumstances and the danger posed by the defendant. The ruling underscored the importance of protecting vulnerable children from individuals like Cambray, who had demonstrated a dangerous pattern of behavior.

Cambray’s criminal history also includes being recognized as Warwickshire Police’s “best trainee officer of the year” in 2002, an accolade awarded out of 100 candidates. He was celebrated as Probationer of the Year by then Warwickshire Police Chief Constable John Burbeck. Despite his early promise and commendations, his career was marred by the serious crimes he later committed.

Following his arrest in September 2015, Cambray was dismissed from Warwickshire Police at the earliest opportunity, as confirmed by police officials. Detective Superintendent Gary Watson expressed the distress caused by the case, emphasizing that all officers are subject to rigorous vetting and scrutiny. The police force’s priority was to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent any further harm.

Cambray’s criminal activities came to light when he admitted to paying a child for sex and possessing indecent images. His guilty plea included six sexual offences against children, and he was scheduled for sentencing on November 27. The court’s condemnation of Cambray’s conduct was unequivocal, with Judge Mark Wall QC describing his actions as a prolonged and calculated course of conduct over several years. Cambray was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and serve a significant portion of his sentence in custody.

The case remains a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for strict oversight of individuals in positions of authority, especially those entrusted with public safety. The community in Warwickshire continues to grapple with the shock of the revelations, and authorities remain committed to safeguarding children and ensuring that justice is fully served.
