CHRISTOPHER BAKER FROM TORQUAY SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE CASES
In a significant legal development, Christopher Baker, a 44-year-old man residing on Westhill Road in Torquay, has been sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison following his conviction for serious sexual offenses committed in the area.The court proceedings revealed that Baker was employed as a night porter at the Templestowe Hotel in Torquay when he committed a disturbing assault on a female guest in 2014.
The incident occurred during the early hours after the woman had checked into the hotel following a social gathering or party.
According to court reports, Baker entered her room and subjected her to a sexual assault.
Fortunately, the victim was able to resist his advances and managed to alert the police, providing crucial information that would later be instrumental in linking Baker to other crimes.
During the investigation, authorities collected DNA evidence from the scene, which ultimately connected Baker to a much older case involving the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Torbay in 2007.
This linkage was a pivotal breakthrough in the case, allowing law enforcement to piece together Baker’s criminal history.
Baker subsequently admitted guilt to both the recent sexual assault at the hotel and the historic rape of the teenage girl.
The court sentenced him to nine years for the rape committed in 2007 and an additional three years for the sexual assault in 2014, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
The details of the 2007 incident revealed that Baker had picked up the young girl in his car, taken her to his flat, and committed the assault there.
At the time, the victim reported the crime, but due to the absence of DNA evidence linking Baker then, he was not apprehended until the recent investigation.
Detective Constable Louise Dutton of Torquay CID praised the victims for their bravery in coming forward.
She stated, “The victim from the sexual assault in 2014 is pleased with this result, and whilst the investigation has been a period of much stress and anxiety for her, she realises that by reporting it she has been able to get justice both for herself and another lady who was attacked back in 2007.
The officer added, “The lady who was a victim of Baker in 2007 has had many difficult years whilst the offender went unidentified and feels she can finally put this behind her and move on with her life at last.
This case exemplifies the importance of victims coming forward to police.
Not only do we provide support, but with DNA evidence, we can connect crimes across years and bring offenders to justice.” As part of his sentence, Baker will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
