2009: MAN JAILED FOR BRANDON RAPES
A 21-year-old man was jailed indefinitely today for brutally raping two women on the same day in a Suffolk town.Christopher Armstrong, of West Drive, Brandon, admitted raping the women in the town on Sunday April 5.
The savage attacks were described by police as “vicious, sustained and unprovoked”.
Both women were badly beaten.
Today, Armstrong was given an indeterminate sentence.
He must serve a minimum of five years 126 days in jail before he can be considered for parole - although he can only be released when the Secretary of State says he presents no danger to the public.
Chief Insp John Brocklebank from Suffolk Police said: “These were harrowing incidents for the two women and for the officers who investigated these crimes.
The levels of violence used by Armstrong were excessive and both women have been extremely brave in assisting officers from the Suffolk and Norfolk Joint Major Investigation Team to bring this case to court.
They have received support from specially trained officers throughout the investigation and court process.” “Thanks to a fast and efficient response from local officers in Brandon, and Armstrong was quickly apprehended and has been remanded in custody ever since.
Today's conviction is testament to the hard work of the Joint Major Investigation Team and Operation Gemini, Suffolk Constabulary's partnership project to provide an improved service following allegations of rape.
This kind of crime is utterly deplorable and extremely rare in Suffolk.
I hope both women and their families are able to find some comfort from the conclusion of this case and can move on with their lives.”
