BOXER SENTENCED FOR VIOLENT ATTACK ON EX-PARTNER IN BRANDON
Richard Wood, a 30-year-old former boxer, was sentenced to 38 months in prison for a violent assault on his ex-partner in her own home in Brandon.
The incident occurred after Wood breach bail conditions by attending her residence unannounced on April 26.
Durham Crown Court heard that Wood entered her house and immediately became aggressive, asking if they were still going to court to "air their dirty laundry." He then spat at her multiple times, called her names, and smashed a candle against the wall, which caused his hand to bleed.
He further assaulted her by punching her in the face, pinning her down, and strangling her, causing her to fear for her life.
The woman sustained injuries including a fractured eye socket, bruises, and abrasions, and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police found Wood nearby, intoxicated and holding a bottle of whisky.
A restraining order was imposed, prohibiting him from contacting or approaching the victim or her residence, with the order remaining indefinitely.
The court acknowledged his prior convictions for violence and damage and noted his remorse and recent diagnosis of ADHD, for which he is receiving medication.
Despite this, the judge emphasized that Wood's actions were violent and frightening, and he was sentenced to prison with a further restraining order in place.
