CHRISTINA DONKIN OF TROON SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL NEGLECT IN CORNWALL

Christina Alice Donkin, born on June 10, 1958, and formerly residing on Laity Road, Troon, Camborne TR14 9EL, was convicted in 2025 for neglect that involved keeping two dogs and nine chickens in insanitary conditions, with dead bird carcasses present.

RSPCA officers responded to Donkin’s residence after she had spent two days hospitalized and contacted social services to report that multiple animals were left alone without care. The rescue team entered the cluttered, faeces-strewn house and discovered nine live chickens and the corpses of deceased birds.

Two saluki dogs were rescued and taken for veterinary examination, which revealed they were suffering from severe flea infestations and dental problems. Both dogs exhibited signs of underweight and withdrawal.

Among the chickens, some were found struggling to walk due to being underweight, with lumps of faeces on their feet. One particularly emaciated chicken, who was constantly shaking her head, had to be euthanized by the vet.

The dogs and chickens were subsequently signed over to the RSPCA for rehoming. During the court hearing, it was noted in mitigation that Donkin had been relocated to supported accommodation and was receiving mental health support.

RSPCA inspector Jim Farr, who assisted in rescuing the animals, stated: “Animals deserve to live healthy lives in suitable environments with proper care. They depend entirely on their owners for all their needs. We strongly urge anyone struggling with pet care to seek help rather than neglect their animals. Sadly, these animals were severely neglected and kept in conditions that greatly jeopardized their health and well-being.”

In sentencing, Donkin was fined £100 for each offence, ordered to pay £400 in costs, and an £80 victim surcharge. Additionally, she received a ten-year ban on owning animals, which she may appeal after eight years; the ban will expire in May 2035.

This case was covered by CornwallLive and reported by RSPCA News.
