CHRIS WILLIAMS OF CRANBROOK FACES CHARGES AFTER GROOMING SCHEME AT MOTE PARK, MAIDSTONE

In a case that has garnered significant public attention, Chris Williams, a 49-year-old resident of Goudhurst Road in Cranbrook, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation involving attempted child grooming and solicitation. The incident unfolded in Maidstone, where Williams had arranged to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old boy at Mote Park Leisure Centre with the intent of engaging in sexual activity.

Williams, who was once the director of a local advertising agency based in Headcorn called VMA, was lured into a trap set by members of the vigilante group known as The Hunted One. This group specializes in exposing individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities with minors. They had been monitoring Williams after he initiated contact on the gay and bisexual dating app Grindr, under the impression he was communicating with a teenage boy named Sam.

According to reports, Williams sent explicit messages to the decoy, expressing his desire to meet and even suggesting that the boy should not be nervous. On the evening of Sunday, April 2, Williams drove his Range Rover to Mote Park, arriving at approximately 9 pm. As he stepped out of his vehicle, he was confronted by members of The Hunted One, who had been waiting for him. The confrontation was recorded and later posted online, quickly gaining widespread attention.

Footage from the encounter shows Williams repeatedly apologizing and pleading for leniency, as well as requesting to be released. The video also captured the moment police arrived to arrest him. During the 20-minute recording, Williams was filmed being detained and handcuffed by law enforcement officers. The footage was viewed over 100,000 times within days and shared extensively across social media platforms, sparking a wave of public outrage and discussion about online safety and child protection.

Following his arrest, Williams appeared before Maidstone Crown Court, where he faced charges related to attempting to meet a child under 16 for sexual purposes, following grooming behavior. His defense lawyer, Kieran Brand, highlighted the impact of the incident on Williams’ personal life, noting that graffiti had been spray-painted on the road outside his home in Goudhurst Road, Cranbrook. Additionally, the incident prompted Williams to resign from his role at VMA, a company he had established 25 years ago in Headcorn.

Williams admitted to the charges, and the court sentenced him to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years. As part of his sentence, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service and participate in a sex offender treatment program. Furthermore, he was given a conditional discharge in 1989 for gross indecency, indicating a prior history of similar issues.

Judge Adele Williams acknowledged the significant impact of the publicity surrounding the case, stating she could just about suspend the sentence due to the “very real effect” of the public exposure. She emphasized that Williams had already suffered substantial public humiliation through the dissemination of the footage and online sharing. The judge also noted that Williams had shown “appropriate remorse” for his actions.

While the court recognized that the child involved was fictitious, it was clear that Williams had been willing to groom a teenage boy, which the judge described as “wholly unacceptable behavior.” As part of his sentence, Williams will also be subject to a three-month tagged curfew, requiring him to remain at his Goudhurst Road residence between 9 pm and 7 am. His name will be entered into the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years.

Judge Williams concluded by condemning the use of the internet for grooming children, describing it as “a great mischief in our society.” The case underscores ongoing concerns about online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community efforts to protect minors from exploitation.
