CHRIS GROOM FROM KING'S LYNN CAUGHT IN ONLINE PREDATOR STING
In a significant case that highlights ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, Chris Groom, a resident of King's Lynn, was caught in a sting operation conducted by a dedicated paedophile hunting team. The incident took place on December 13th, 2020, when Groom was apprehended by Kappie Hunter, a member of the vigilant group actively working to identify and confront individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities involving minors.Groom had been engaging in online conversations with what he believed was a child, but in reality, he was communicating with members of the paedophile hunting team who posed as minors to catch offenders. The confrontation was part of a broader effort to protect vulnerable children from predators operating in digital spaces.
Following his arrest, Chris Groom faced legal proceedings and subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. His case was heard in court, and on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, he was sentenced for his actions. The judge handed down a sentence that included a 24-month community order, which requires him to remain under supervision and adhere to certain conditions.
In addition to the community order, Groom was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, aimed at rehabilitating him and reinforcing the importance of accountability. He was also sentenced to 20 days of rehabilitation, designed to address underlying issues related to his behaviour. Furthermore, Groom was required to participate in a 39-day Sexual Thinking Behaviour Program, a specialized course intended to help prevent future offending.
As part of the court's decision, Groom was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for a period of five years, restricting his activities and contact to safeguard potential victims. Court costs of £60 and a victim surcharge of £90 were also imposed, contributing to the ongoing efforts to support victims and prevent similar crimes in the future.
This case underscores the persistent threat posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant community and law enforcement efforts to protect children from exploitation. The actions of the paedophile hunting team and the judicial system's response demonstrate a firm stance against such criminal behaviour.
