CHING SHIONG HENG OF LERWICK ADDED TO SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER AFTER CHILD ABUSE CASE
In July 2012, a 30-year-old Chinese man from Lerwick was placed on the sex offenders’ register following charges of sexual abuse involving a 15-year-old girl.Ching Shiong Heng, of St Magnus Street, admitted in Lerwick Sheriff Court to causing the girl to participate in a sexual act at his residence on November 5th of the previous year. Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie stated that Heng had instructed the girl not to disclose the incident, but she later confided in a teacher.
Initially, the girl claimed she was seeking advice about a friend, but the teacher suspected that the girl was the actual person involved, and the full story gradually came to light.
Heng’s defence lawyer, John Slavin, acknowledged that Heng, who works at a Chinese restaurant in Lerwick, did not attempt to downplay his actions. Slavin added that Heng’s employers had been informed of the incident and highlighted that Heng was at risk of deportation since his visa was due to expire.
Sheriff Philip Mann, after hearing the case, delayed sentencing until September 5th to allow for the preparation of background reports. Heng was released on bail, and the Sheriff remarked, “I’m obliged to get reports from the social work department before I decide what to do with you.”
