ARMAGH WOMAN CHERRY NESBITT SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY AFTER PONY'S TRAGIC DEATH IN ARMAGH
In a case that has shocked the local community, Cherry Nesbitt, formerly known as Cherry McGaughey, of Orangefield Crescent in Armagh, was convicted in her absence for causing unnecessary suffering to a white pony.The incident unfolded at Barkston Livery Yard located on Cloghramer Road in Newry, where the pony was kept under Nesbitt's care.
According to court records, Nesbitt, a mother of three, sold the severely ill and emaciated pony to a new owner after neglecting its worsening condition.
The pony was in such a dire state that upon collection, the new owner found it unable to stand and suffering greatly.
Recognizing the severity of the animal's condition, a veterinarian was called to the scene, and the decision was made to euthanise the pony on welfare grounds to prevent further suffering.
The court proceedings revealed that Nesbitt had previously administered over-the-counter medication to the pony several months prior.
However, she failed to seek professional veterinary assessment when the animal's health deteriorated.
Her refusal to cooperate with investigations conducted by the local authority’s Animal Welfare officer further compounded her case.
In sentencing, Nesbitt was ordered to pay a total of £567.00, which covered fines, costs, and a surcharge.
Additionally, she received a two-year disqualification order from owning or caring for animals, which will remain in effect until February 2025.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the importance of responsible pet ownership within the Armagh community.
