CHARLIE BROWN AND SOUMEYA NAIT-YAHIA CONVICTED IN CHELSEA FOR CRUELTY TO CATS AND FATAL INJURIES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Chelsea community, Charlie Damian Brown, born on April 12, 2002, and Soumeya Nait-Yahia, born on April 3, 2002, both residents of Wellington Buildings on Ebury Bridge Road, faced justice for their involvement in the tragic deaths and injuries of two beloved cats. The incident unfolded at their top-floor flat, where the animals, named Lelu and Billy, suffered severe injuries that ultimately led to their deaths.

Brown, who was accused of inflicting multiple injuries on the cats, pleaded not guilty to four charges, including two counts of causing blunt force trauma to Lelu and Billy. Despite his denial, he was found guilty after a trial and received a sentence at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on February 6, 2025. Nait-Yahia also entered a plea of not guilty to two offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 but was convicted following the proceedings.

The court heard harrowing details about the injuries sustained by the cats while they were in the couple’s flat. Lelu, owned by Nait-Yahia, was reported to have fallen from a fifth-floor window of the building on June 17, 2023. A neighbour, concerned for the animal’s welfare, took her to a veterinary clinic. X-rays conducted at Blue Cross Victoria Animal Hospital revealed that Lelu had suffered a broken right elbow, along with head trauma. The veterinarian described her condition as grave, and after assessing her injuries, decided that humane euthanasia was the most compassionate option.

Further examination through a post-mortem revealed that Lelu, who was only two years old, had sustained multiple fractures, including broken ribs and a broken toe, which were in various stages of healing. These injuries indicated a pattern of physical abuse prior to her fall. Additional recent fractures to her ribs, jaw, and vertebrae suggested ongoing trauma, raising serious concerns about her treatment.

On July 7, 2023, RSPCA Inspector Miranda Albison visited Brown’s flat to investigate the circumstances surrounding Lelu’s death and the injuries of her eight-month-old kitten, Billy. The defendants claimed that Billy had fallen from a different window in September 2022. However, Billy was found with multiple injuries, including a ruptured bladder and broken ribs. Despite efforts to save her, the injuries were too severe, and she was euthanized. An expert veterinary report concluded that Billy’s injuries were inconsistent with a simple fall, indicating that she had been subjected to blunt force trauma, particularly to her chest.

The court was informed that the defendants maintained they were asleep when Lelu fell through a small gap in a sash window. Brown claimed that when he found her on the ground, she was unable to walk and appeared to have a broken leg. These explanations were met with skepticism by the court, given the extent and nature of the injuries.

Following the trial, RSPCA Inspector Albison issued a statement condemning the defendants’ actions. She stated, “Brown deliberately abused these two cats on multiple occasions and he and his partner failed to seek veterinary treatment for them. This appalling behaviour ended in the sad deaths of both felines, who had suffered multiple injuries.”

As for the sentencing, Charlie Brown was sentenced to eight months in prison. Additionally, he received a seven-year ban on keeping animals, which will expire in February 2032. Brown has appealed his sentence and was released on bail with a curfew. His appeal hearing is scheduled for May 23, 2025. Nait-Yahia received a 12-month community order, which includes 180 hours of unpaid work, and was also banned from owning animals for seven years, reflecting the court’s serious stance on animal cruelty.
