CHARLES KELLY OF CO GALWAY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE AND ATTEMPTED RAPE IN TUA
In a case that has shocked the community of Corofin and the wider County Galway area, Charles Kelly, aged 69, was sentenced to a four-year prison term following his conviction on multiple charges related to sexual assault and attempted rape. The proceedings took place at Galway Circuit Criminal Court, where Kelly pleaded guilty to a series of serious allegations involving a young girl.According to court records, Kelly admitted to seven sample charges of sexually assaulting a child over a period spanning from 1994 to 2000. These charges detailed a disturbing pattern of abuse that began when the victim was only five years old and continued until she was nearly 11. The court also heard that Kelly faced four counts of attempted unlawful carnal knowledge, which he also admitted to.
The court was informed that the abuse was carried out in various locations, including Kelly’s bedroom, a shed, and a disused car, indicating a disturbing level of premeditation and opportunity. The victim was reportedly bribed with sweets to keep silent about the abuse, and Kelly warned her not to disclose what was happening, further complicating her ability to seek help or confide in others.
Legal representatives and the judge discussed the long-term impact of the abuse, with concerns raised that the girl might suffer from psychological issues in the future as a result of Kelly’s actions. The case was described by Judge Carroll Moran as a “sordid” example of criminal behavior, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses committed.
Kelly’s sentencing reflects the court’s condemnation of his actions, and the community of Corofin, along with the wider County Galway area, is left to grapple with the implications of this disturbing case. The court’s decision underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable children from such heinous acts and holding offenders accountable for their crimes.
