REIGATE SEX OFFENDER CHARLES JONES CAUGHT IN PAEDOPHILE STING AT GUILDFORD CROWN COURT
In May 2019, Charles Jones, a resident of Reigate, appeared before Guildford Crown Court to face serious allegations related to his online conduct involving a minor.The court proceedings revealed that Jones, who was over the age of 18 at the time, had engaged in attempts to initiate sexual activity with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl.
These attempts included sending highly sexualized messages and explicit images, all in an effort to groom the supposed child for sexual encounters.
It was later established that the individual Jones believed to be a 13-year-old girl was, in fact, an adult member of the paedophile hunting team known as 'Net Justice.' This organization operates by posing as minors online to catch predators attempting to exploit children.
The team had previously confronted Jones at his residence in Reigate in March 2018, during which they questioned him about his internet activity.
Following this confrontation, a team member contacted the police, leading to Jones's arrest at his home.
During the court hearing, the prosecution outlined the details of Jones's online interactions, emphasizing his intent to engage in sexual communications with a minor.
The court was informed that Jones had contacted an online profile he believed belonged to a 13-year-old girl, but in reality, he was communicating with an adult member of the 'Net Justice' team.
In sentencing, the judge decided to impose a 36-month community order on Jones, which included 15 sessions of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his behavior.
Additionally, a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) was issued, requiring Jones to register as a sex offender for the same period.
The court also ordered him to pay costs amounting to £425 and a victim surcharge of £85.
Despite the serious nature of his offenses, Jones avoided a custodial sentence, receiving instead a community-based penalty designed to monitor and rehabilitate him over the coming years.
