CHARLES DURDLE FROM UCKFIELD SLAMMED FOR ABUSING GIRL IN SUSSEX

In June 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Charles Durdle, a resident of Uckfield, who was convicted of sexually abusing a ten-year-old girl in Sussex. The heinous acts committed by Durdle, who was 23 years old at the time, involved groping the young girl to satisfy his own perverted urges. The girl, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was subjected to this abuse in a manner that deeply violated her trust and innocence.

According to court proceedings, Durdle’s actions took place between May and August of 2019. The case revealed that Durdle had a troubling fascination with taboo subjects, which he acted upon in a way that betrayed the trust of the girl’s parents and the community. The girl’s behavior changed markedly after the incidents; she was once a happy and sociable child but gradually became withdrawn and visibly upset. Her mother recounted the emotional toll of the abuse, stating, “I will never forget the haunting words that came from my daughter. It fills me with chills. He has ripped our whole lives apart.”

She further expressed her guilt and helplessness, saying, “I am eaten up with guilt that as a mother I was not there for her during these horrific acts. We feel trapped and want to wake up from this nightmare. We will all find it extremely hard to trust somebody. My innocent child’s life has changed from being happy to now being guarded and looking inward. She is not the girl she once was.”

Prosecutor Rowan Jenkins highlighted the severity of the case, emphasizing that Durdle’s behavior was a serious breach of trust. Durdle admitted to his crimes during the court proceedings at Lewes Crown Court. Her Honour Judge Janet Waddicor described his conduct as “truly shocking,” especially considering how he deceived those close to the girl. The judge pointed out that such betrayal can have long-lasting effects, often leading to victims not being believed, which can cause further emotional harm and social rifts.

Despite the gravity of his actions, Durdle’s remorse and his decision to accept responsibility were noted by the judge. As a result, he was sentenced to a ten-month prison term, suspended for a period, as he is currently undergoing rehabilitation for sex offenders. The court also mandated that Durdle complete 30 sessions of therapy, participate in the Horizon sex offender programme, and be subject to a ten-year registration on the sex offenders register. Additionally, a ten-year sexual harm prevention order was imposed to restrict his access to children and prevent any future harm.

Charles Durdle, who resides at Queens Approach in Uckfield, was thus held accountable for his actions, with the court emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring that offenders are monitored and rehabilitated to prevent recurrence of such crimes.
