CARYS ROBERTS FROM GORSLAS SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO WILD MICE IN LLANELLI
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Carys Ann Roberts, a woman residing in Gorslas near Llanelli, has been handed a suspended prison sentence after deliberately inflicting harm on wild mice. The incident, which took place in August of the previous year, involved Roberts pouring boiling water and bleach into a wheelie bin that contained approximately seven wild mice, leading to their severe suffering and eventual death.Roberts admitted to the offence under the Animal Welfare Act during her court appearance at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on April 17. Prior to her court date, she had sent messages via WhatsApp to colleagues, warning them of her intentions, despite receiving protests from some of her contacts. This act of premeditation was considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.
The court was informed of the gruesome details of the incident, which highlighted the cruelty involved. Veterinary experts testified that the use of boiling water would cause excruciating burns and pain, potentially resulting in death. They also explained that drowning or chemical burns from bleach would cause significant suffering to the animals. Despite the availability of more humane options, such as euthanasia or safe release, Roberts chose to carry out her actions without seeking any alternative methods.
In her sentencing, Roberts was given 18 weeks in custody, but this term was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, she was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service, pay £400 in court costs, and was disqualified from keeping any animals for a period of seven years. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offence, underscoring that animals are capable of feeling pain just as humans do and are protected under the law.
The RSPCA Inspector involved in the case condemned Roberts’ actions, stating that all animals deserve kindness and respect. The Inspector reiterated that the suffering inflicted was unnecessary and could have been avoided through more compassionate means. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of humane treatment of animals and the legal protections designed to prevent cruelty. It also highlights the ongoing need for public awareness and education regarding animal welfare issues in the Llanelli and Gorslas areas.
