CAROLINE DOYLE FROM CHIRK BREACHES SEXUAL HARM PREVENTION ORDER IN WREXHAM

In January 2017, Caroline Doyle, a woman residing in Chirk, found herself in serious legal trouble after breaching a court-imposed sexual harm prevention order. Doyle, aged 54, had previously been convicted and sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court in 2008 for serious offenses, including the sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 and possession of indecent photographs. Her prior sentence resulted in a prison term of two years and eight months. Following her release, she was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which included strict conditions aimed at preventing her from possessing any devices capable of recording images, whether still or moving, for use on video or DVD players.

On January 6, Wrexham Magistrates Court heard that Doyle contacted police after receiving messages on Facebook. When officers arrived at her residence, she attempted to show them the messages on her phone. However, during the interaction, officers observed that her phone was equipped with a camera. This discovery prompted a search of her home, where authorities found an Olympus camera, another camera phone, and a laptop with a built-in webcam. These items raised immediate concerns because they potentially violated the terms of her order.

During police interviews, Doyle admitted that she was aware she should not possess the camera but claimed she used it to take photographs of jewelry she had crafted as a hobby. She also stated that she believed she could use the laptop under her partner’s supervision, but the prosecution clarified that her order explicitly required permission from the chief constable of Merseyside Police to own such devices. Doyle acknowledged that no such permission had been granted. She further explained that although her phones had cameras, she had not considered this when purchasing them, implying a lack of awareness or oversight.

Representing herself in court, Doyle expressed remorse for her breach of the order. She revealed that she had attempted suicide twice over the past four years and had engaged in self-harm, highlighting her mental health struggles. Doyle attributed her recent actions to a difficult relationship with an alcoholic partner, which she described as having clouded her judgment. She said, “I’ve not been thinking straight over the last four years due to being in a very difficult relationship with an alcoholic, which is now over.” She also reflected on her confusion regarding the devices, stating, “I keep asking myself over and over why I bought the phone. The laptop, I just didn’t think about the camera on it.”

She explained that the camera on her phones belonged to her former partner and had become mixed up with her belongings during multiple moves over the years. Doyle insisted that the photographs she took were solely of jewelry she made at home and that no images had left her residence. She also shared her hope to rebuild her life, mentioning that she had rekindled a relationship with a former girlfriend and was seeking stability.

Magistrates Chair Catherine Watling emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting the need for specialized information given Doyle’s history of self-harm and mental health issues. The court decided to grant Doyle unconditional bail, with her scheduled appearance at Wrexham Magistrates Court on February 10 to address the breach further.
