CARL WRIGHT FROM COUNDON DURHAM JAILED FOR FAILING TO LIVE AT NOTIFIED ADDRESS WHILE HELPING DISABLED FATHER
In a case that highlights the complexities of managing sex offender restrictions, Carl Andrew Wright, aged 25, from Coundon, Durham, was sentenced to a short prison term after failing to adhere to the conditions of his registration as a sex offender.The incident occurred despite his ongoing efforts to care for his disabled father, which added a layer of complexity to his legal obligations.
Wright was placed under a notification requirement for five years following his conviction on December 4 of the previous year.
His conviction stemmed from possessing four indecent images of a child, a serious offense that necessitated strict monitoring and compliance with registration rules.
Durham Crown Court heard that on August 12, police officers, specifically a public protection officer tasked with monitoring sex offenders, visited Wright’s residence and subsequently arrested him.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Joanne Kidd revealed that Wright had been found to be living at his father George’s house in Tudhoe Moor, near Spennymoor, over the summer months.
This was significant because Wright’s residence was supposed to be at a different, notified address, and his presence at his father’s home was not authorized under the terms of his registration.
Kidd explained that Wright’s father has physical disabilities, and Wright had been assisting him with daily care, which was a key factor in the case.
It was noted that Wright had been staying at his father’s house on at least 25 days over recent weeks, a fact that Wright himself was unaware of any restrictions regarding his accommodation.
During police interviews, Wright expressed confusion about the specific conditions of his registration but acknowledged that he had been staying at his father’s residence to help care for him.
The court also heard details of Wright’s criminal history.
His conviction involved befriending a 14-year-old girl, engaging in grooming behaviors, and encouraging her to send nude photographs of herself.
These images were found in his possession, underscoring the seriousness of his offenses.
Wright admitted to failing to comply with the terms of his sex offender registration from July 1 to August 11, a period during which he was supposed to adhere strictly to the conditions set by the authorities.
In mitigation, Andrew White, representing Wright, acknowledged that his client’s failure to meet registration requirements was a serious breach, but emphasized that Wright had immediately pleaded guilty when the case was brought before the magistrates.
White described Wright as remorseful and expressed regret over the situation.
He explained that Wright’s primary motivation was to assist his seriously ill father, providing him with around-the-clock care.
White also pointed out that there was no evidence to suggest any inappropriate behavior occurred while Wright was at his father’s home.
However, the judge, Recorder Jonathan Bennett, took a stern view of the breach.
He reminded Wright that, following his conviction, he would have been given a form explaining his registration obligations.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the breach, especially given the relatively short time since the registration was put in place.
Ultimately, Wright was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison but will remain subject to notification requirements upon his release, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
