SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED AGAIN FOR ASSAULT AND BREACH OF TRUST
A convicted sex offender, Carl Anthony Paul, has been sentenced to an additional five years in prison after a recent conviction for sexual assault. In 1990, Paul received a 12-month sentence for a rape and unlawful sexual intercourse committed against a young girl, who was reportedly around 10 years old at the time of his first offense.
Despite this conviction, he later breached trust and assaulted another woman he knew.
She had agreed to spend the night with him under the understanding that no intercourse would occur.
However, Paul took advantage of her when she fell asleep, engaging in sexual intercourse with her without consent.
Prosecutor James Evans told Cardiff Crown Court that records indicated the victim was just 10 years old when Paul admitted to having sex with her.
However, Paul's own recollection suggested she had been older.
The court heard that in his latest offense, Paul breached the trust of a woman he was in an on-off relationship with by having sex with her while she was asleep and unaware.
The woman had consented to him staying over with the understanding that no intercourse would occur, but Paul took advantage after she fell asleep.
Judge David Wynn Morgan sentenced Paul to a total of five years and four months in prison, emphasizing that he took advantage of the woman's trust and had prior convictions for rape and battery.
The court ordered that Paul's name be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
The judge noted that the offense was aggravated by Paul's previous rape conviction and a battery conviction obtained in 2009.
His guilty plea was considered a mitigation, as it spared the victim the trauma of giving evidence.
