MAN JAILED FOR ONLINE CHILD SEX OFFENCES
A 23-year-old man has received a sentence of two years and four months in prison for multiple online child sex offences involving three young boys.Cameron Mullen, who currently has no fixed address, admitted to engaging in sexual communications with three boys, encouraging them to partake in sexual acts, distributing obscene images, and causing a child to observe sexual activity.
Initially, Mullen was granted bail shortly after his first court appearance, but this was revoked, leading to his continued detention.
The offences took place from June 2024 through January 2025.
At Dungannon Crown Court on Wednesday, the presiding judge described Mullen’s conduct as demonstrating a "predatory pattern." During the proceedings on 11 January 2025, police revealed that they had been informed by a mother whose child had been contacted and sent sexual messages by Mullen.
Further reports from police included a case where another mother claimed her son received explicit images from Mullen.
Additionally, a separate incident involved Mullen messaging a boy and requesting photos of his genitals in exchange for money.
Mullen appeared before the court via video link from Maghaberry prison.
Although he has no prior convictions, police had noted previous reports of similar conduct, none of which resulted in charges.
Judge Brian Sherrard sentenced Mullen to two years and four months in prison, noting that part of the sentence had already been served.
The judge emphasized that one victim, who has autism and is socially isolated, was particularly affected, experiencing fear, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety.
The judge condemned the defendant’s denial of sexual interest in children, stating the evidence to the contrary was clear.
Mullen had yet to offer any explanation for his actions, which involved a series of overlapping offenses targeting three boys and their families.
While the offences were committed online rather than face-to-face, the judge underscored the seriousness of the case and the dangers of social media used in this manner.
Mullen’s behavior was characterized as predatory.
As part of his sentence, Mullen will be listed on the sex offender register and subject to a 10-year sexual offences prevention order.
