REDCAR MAN CAMERON JOHNSON JAILED FOR ASSAULT AND STRANGULATION OF FIANCÉE
A woman has described her experience of being attacked by her fiancé, including an incident where he took her to a river and bit her face.At Teesside Crown Court, it was revealed that Johnson, aged 28 and from Redcar, had last assaulted his ex-partner in August 2021 and April 2022.
During the first incident in Newcastle, the couple had been out for food and drinks when Johnson showed signs of aggression, complaining that she was upsetting him.
Following their departure from a bar, she shared details of an earlier unwanted advance by another man, which appeared to provoke an argument as they walked back to their hotel.
Johnson stopped her, covered her mouth, grabbed her throat, and then marched her toward a river, holding her arm behind her back.
He then stopped, faced her, grabbed her face with both hands, and bit her nose hard enough to cause bleeding and pain.
She described the sensation as agony, and when she tried to pull away, he bit down harder.
She managed to escape when she saw people outside a nightclub and was nearly struck by a taxi.
Months later, after reading messages from her previous separation on her phone, Johnson attacked her again, biting her ear, right cheek, nose, and the other ear, all while holding her down by the throat, making it hard for her to breathe.
He punched her in the face and covered her mouth to stifle her screams before she fled in her underwear, seeking help from neighbors.
Police intervened.
In a court statement, she expressed that trusting him had been natural and easy but that he shattered that trust through his violent actions.
She described how he led her down the street, causing her to believe she might be harmed again, and mentioned her ongoing struggles with anxiety, possible PTSD, and scars from the assaults.
She said her life has been profoundly affected, feeling triggered constantly.
It was revealed that Johnson had previous convictions for domestic violence, including pulling a partner by her hair and biting her head in 2019.
His lawyer noted he pleaded guilty early and was ashamed, citing efforts to control his temper and jealousy, and that he had sought mental health support while in custody.
The court was told he had experienced recent assaults in the Redcar area, likely linked to rumors about his behavior.
The judge stated that strangulation is a particularly malicious form of assault, highlighting how quickly harm can occur during episodes of rage.
Although the intended sentence might seem inadequate, the judge imposed a three-year prison term, constrained by legal limits for the offences involved.
