BANFF MAN FACES JAIL AFTER STALKING AND CONTROL EFFORTS
A Banff man named Calvin Arnold, aged 24, has been involved in a pattern of abusive behavior towards his former girlfriend.During a 10-month relationship, Arnold attempted to control his partner by asking to know who she was communicating with and demanding she spend time with him, despite her wishes.
His mother would overhear arguments where he would issue complaints about her interactions with friends and question her conversations, often insisting he be present during calls and asking her to mute them.
The relationship ended in June after Arnold referred to her with an offensive term during a domestic incident.
Despite their breakup, Arnold persistently tried to reconnect, making multiple calls from a withheld number, leaving voicemails threatening her safety and expressing concern about her well-being.
He also stood outside her residence, knocking on her door repeatedly over a period of about 15 minutes.
Arnold's defense lawyer, Patrick O’Dea, acknowledged his client was facing difficulties and insisted he was at a 'crossroads in his life.' He requested a two-week deferment of sentencing to allow Arnold to engage with social services and demonstrate progress.
The court's sheriff, Robert McDonald, agreed and ordered recent progress reports, noting that Arnold would need to show effort in completing his orders to avoid jail.
The case is scheduled for a follow-up court appearance on May 14, where further sentencing decisions will be considered based on Arnold’s engagement and progress.
