CALLUM HUGHES FROM MAUCHLIN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN LIVERPOOL

In May 2018, a heartbreaking incident unfolded involving a young girl and a teenage offender in the United Kingdom. An eight-year-old girl, who was sleeping at her home, was subjected to a sexual assault by Callum Hughes, an 18-year-old male. The assault took place at an address in Knowsley, but Hughes, who was residing at Jean Armour Drive in Mauchlin, Scotland, initially denied any involvement in the attack.

However, the truth came to light when the young girl, visibly distressed, confided in her parents during breakfast the following morning. She revealed that she had not been able to sleep the night before because of what Hughes had done to her. Her parents, alarmed and deeply concerned, immediately took her to Alder Hey Hospital for medical examination. Medical professionals discovered internal injuries consistent with sexual assault, confirming the child's account and prompting urgent investigations.

Following the incident, authorities swiftly apprehended Hughes. Despite his denials, evidence and testimonies led to his conviction. A jury at Liverpool Crown Court found Hughes guilty of one count of penetrative sexual activity with a child. The court proceedings revealed that Hughes was 17 years old at the time of the offence, which added a layer of complexity to the case.

In the sentencing phase, Hughes was handed an eight-year prison term. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure aimed at protecting the community from future harm. As of the sentencing date, he had already served approximately 15 months in detention.

Expressing his anguish and frustration, the victim’s father voiced his discontent with the length of Hughes’s sentence. He stated, “My little girl still has nightmares about what happened.” The father emphasized his helplessness, saying, “I can’t change what has done to her, but I can help protect other little children out there.” He further expressed his belief that no sentence could truly compensate for the trauma inflicted, remarking, “No sentence is long enough, and he could be out of prison in just under three years.”

Despite this, he acknowledged the legal guidelines that the judge had to follow, respecting the judicial process. The father also shared the emotional toll the incident has taken on his family, revealing that he, his wife, and their two sons were all nearby during the attack but were unable to intervene. “It’s really difficult to get your head round it,” he admitted. “It’s hard to process that we were so close and yet powerless to help her. It’s something we have to live with for the rest of our lives.”
