CARDIFF MAN GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR STRANGLING PARTNER
A man from Cardiff received a suspended prison sentence following a series of brutal assaults on his pregnant partner, including strangulation and lifting her off the ground by her neck to the point where she saw “black spots” and believed he was going to kill her.Callum Coate, aged 26, from Handley Road in Splott, inflicted violence on his partner throughout 2024, with his abusive behavior continuing after their child’s arrival.
The violence appeared driven by jealousy and his requests for money to purchase cannabis.
According to information presented at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, the victim endured months of controlling conduct, with Coate sending up to 50 text messages and making 10 calls in short periods.
He also called her “slag” and “slut,” accusing her of cheating.
The court detailed four separate episodes of violence: In February 2024, Coate damaged her home before grabbing her throat with both hands; in May 2024, while she was 10 weeks pregnant, he punched her chest and kneed her stomach; in October 2024, he punched her and strangled her, leaving visible marks on her neck; and in February 2025, he lifted her by the throat and pressed her against a wall until she lost consciousness.
In her victim statement, the woman stated, ‘Since reporting the incident, I have felt constantly on edge and find myself looking out of the window to ensure he isn’t outside.
I do this day and night, fearing he will return to my property.’ She also expressed that she experiences night terrors, waking up upset and gasping for air as if still being strangled by Coate.
Judge Paul Hobson addressed Coate, saying, ‘You were violent and threatening towards her—she did not deserve this treatment.’ Coate admitted to controlling and coercive behavior, three counts of intentional strangulation, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was sentenced to 24 months in prison, suspended for two years.
