BRYAN JONES FROM COLWYN BAY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NORTH WALES

In a case that has shocked the community of Colwyn Bay and the surrounding areas, Bryan Jones, a 66-year-old man from Penn Court, Llysfaen near Colwyn Bay, has been sentenced to six years in prison for serious child sex offences committed more than three decades ago. The offences, which took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s, involved Jones sexually abusing two young boys, exploiting their innocence during a period when he was much younger.

Details of the case emerged during a hearing at Mold Crown Court, where it was revealed that the victims, who had kept their trauma largely to themselves for many years, finally confronted Jones about 15 years prior to his arrest. During this confrontation, Jones admitted to the abuse, expressing remorse and apologizing to the victims, though he struggled to explain his actions. It was only earlier this year that the victims felt sufficiently empowered to report the crimes to the police, leading to Jones's arrest and subsequent full admissions of guilt.

Judge Rhys Rowlands addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of Jones's actions. He stated that Jones had committed profoundly serious offences by taking advantage of his young victims, causing them lasting emotional harm. The judge noted that the victims had struggled to come to terms with what had happened to them, highlighting the long-term impact of Jones’s misconduct.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Rowlands pointed out that Jones, who had no prior criminal record, had managed to evade justice for many years. The judge remarked, “You got away with your behaviour for many years. I am afraid at 67 you are going to have to face the consequences of what you then did.”

Jones had pleaded guilty to 20 charges, including indecent assault and gross indecency, which had been initially brought before the local magistrates’ court. The allegations were described as “deeply unpleasant” by the prosecution. Prosecuting barrister Matthew Dunford recounted how one of the victims remembered praying that the sexual activity would not happen when Jones suggested they play strip jack poker. The other victim recalled being told to fantasize about a supermodel while Jones performed sexual acts upon him, leading to flashbacks and ongoing trauma.

Defence lawyer Simon Mintz described Jones as an isolated and lonely individual who had made full confessions and shown remorse for his actions. As part of his sentence, Jones was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to a lifetime sexual offences prevention order (SOPO). This order prohibits him from contacting the victims, living in the same house as a child, or having any unsupervised contact with children.

North Wales Police’s Amethyst Team, a dedicated unit specializing in sexual offences, issued a statement emphasizing the importance of supporting victims. DI Kelly Isaacs from the team stated, “It’s important the public know that North Wales Police and its partner agencies offer specialist support to victims of sexual offences. Bryan Jones admitted his accountability for the offences he committed. Sex offenders should be clear that there are no excuses for the destructive impact their actions have on their victims.”

The Amethyst Team encourages anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse to come forward and seek help. They provide confidential support services, including the Amethyst SARC Helpline, which can be reached at 0808 156 3658, for those not yet ready to report to the police but seeking assistance and guidance.
