BRIAN ROBERTS SENTENCED IN ROTHERHAM FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF PUPILS AT SOUTH YORKSHIRE SCHOOL

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Rotherham, a former teacher named Brian Roberts has been sentenced to five years in prison for the indecent assault of two young female pupils. The offences took place during the early 1980s and early 1990s at a comprehensive school in South Yorkshire, where Roberts was employed as a mathematics teacher.

Roberts, aged 62 and residing on Meadow Drive in Swinton, Rotherham, appeared before Doncaster Crown Court to face the charges. The court heard harrowing details of his misconduct, which spanned over a decade and involved calculated, persistent, and serious acts of abuse against the girls. Judge Linda Sutcliffe emphasized the importance of sending a clear message to those entrusted with the care of young children that such behavior would not be tolerated in a civilized society. She described Roberts' conduct as grave, noting that it warranted a substantial custodial sentence to reflect the severity of his actions.

During her sentencing remarks, Judge Sutcliffe acknowledged Roberts' previously distinguished career as a teacher, describing him as a gifted educator who was well-regarded and loved by his pupils. However, she pointed out that this reputation made his betrayal of trust even more reprehensible. The judge stated, "That in a sense makes it even worse what you did to these two complainants because they were in your thrall. They did what you expected of them and they did it over a period of time, and in relation to each of them, you progressed from relatively minor instances of indecent assault to an offence which in each case was very serious."

Evidence presented at the trial earlier this year at Sheffield Crown Court revealed disturbing details of Roberts' methods. Witnesses described how he would walk down the school corridor carrying a large set of keys, jingling them as a signal for his first victim to leave her classroom and meet him. The girl recounted how Roberts would take her to a nearby stairwell or stockroom, where he would indecently assault her on almost a daily basis. She explained that while Roberts never used threats, he made it clear that she was expected to comply with his demands, leaving her feeling confused and ashamed.

Prosecutor David Brooke informed the court that, a decade after beginning his abuse of the first girl, Roberts turned his attention to another young female pupil. This second victim was subjected to multiple indecent assaults over several years. Roberts denied six counts of indecent assault—four relating to the first girl between 1982 and 1986, and two concerning the second girl between 1991 and 1993.

Judge Sutcliffe pointed out that the similarity in the victims' appearance—both being well-developed, blonde, and attractive—was not coincidental. She criticized Roberts for not admitting guilt, stating, "The single most important feature of mitigation in cases of this kind is a guilty plea. That was not forthcoming in this case. It exhibits a lack of remorse."

In mitigation, the court was told that Roberts was a supportive family man, regularly visiting his elderly and infirm mother and mother-in-law. Despite this, one of his victims outside the court expressed her feelings, saying, "The upset and devastation that this caused my family cannot be compared to five years in jail."

It was also announced that upon his release, Roberts will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure designed to protect the community from any future risk he might pose.
