BRIAN MCLEAN FROM TORQUAY SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES

In December 2016, a serious case emerged involving Brian McLean, a 58-year-old merchant seaman residing in Torquay, who was found guilty of possessing and sharing disturbing images of child abuse.

The incident was brought to light during proceedings at Exeter Crown Court, where it was revealed that McLean had engaged in the online exchange of such illicit material.

McLean, who lives on Queen Street in the Ellacombe area of Torquay, admitted to multiple charges, including one count of distributing indecent images and three counts of creating such images.

The court was informed that he had used a pay-as-you-go mobile phone to facilitate the exchange, which allowed police to trace his activities through the purchase locations of the top-up vouchers.

This method of communication was instrumental in linking him to the illegal content.

Investigations uncovered that McLean possessed a significant collection of indecent images and videos.

His computer contained 51 images and ten movies classified in the most severe category of abuse, indicating the most disturbing and explicit material.

Additionally, there were 201 still photographs and 30 videos depicting less serious acts, but still highly inappropriate and illegal.

During the court hearing, Martin Salloway, representing McLean, stated that his client was aware of his problematic behavior and expressed a desire to seek help.

The court was told that McLean was genuinely concerned about his actions and was willing to undergo treatment to address his issues.

Judge Graham Cottle, presiding over the case, sentenced McLean to a two-year community order.

As part of this sentence, McLean was required to attend a 30-day course organized by the probation service, aimed at addressing his offending behavior.

Furthermore, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £420.

The judge also mandated that McLean sign the Sex Offenders Register for a period of five years and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future activities.

In his remarks, Judge Cottle emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and warned McLean that if he were to be caught again, he would face immediate imprisonment.

The judge acknowledged McLean’s recognition of his problem and his willingness to seek help, which influenced the decision to avoid a custodial sentence this time.

The court stressed that the probation work would be conducted on a one-to-one basis, with a focus on helping McLean break free from his harmful habits and prevent future offenses.
