A man identified as Brian Matthews, aged 69 and hailing from Angus, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offences that took place decades ago. The offences, which include physical abuse and rape, were committed against two women and date back to the 1970s, highlighting the long-lasting impact of these crimes.Matthews’ conviction was secured at the High Court in Edinburgh on the 20th of October, 2023. Following this, on the 23rd of November, he was formally sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow, where the judge handed down the nine-year prison term. The lengthy sentence underscores the gravity of the offences and the judicial system’s stance on such crimes, regardless of the passage of time.
Detective Constable Daniel Cogan expressed his appreciation for the bravery of the victims, stating, “It’s down to these women coming forward to report Matthews’ despicable actions that he’ll now face the consequences. I want to commend them for their strength throughout the investigation and court process.” He emphasized that the conviction demonstrates there is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual offences, reaffirming police Scotland’s commitment to justice.
“Matthews’ conviction shows there is no time bar to reporting sexual offences. Police Scotland is committed to bringing those responsible to justice, regardless of when the offences occurred,” Cogan added. He also urged other victims to come forward, assuring them that they would receive thorough investigation and support from specially trained officers and partner agencies. The case serves as a reminder that justice can be pursued regardless of how many years have passed since the crimes were committed, and that victims’ voices are vital in the fight against sexual violence.
