BRIAN MATHEWS FROM NEWTON SENTENCED AFTER YEARS OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN LIVERPOOL

In a case that has shocked the community of Newton, a local man named Brian Mathews, aged 61, has been formally convicted and sentenced for a series of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.

The incidents, which spanned over several years and occurred more than a decade ago, only came to public attention earlier this year, leading to a court hearing at Liverpool Crown Court last Friday.

Prosecutor Michael Stephenson outlined to the court that the abuse began when the victim was approximately 10 years old.

Over the course of several years, until she reached the age of 16, Mathews engaged in repeated acts of sexual activity with her.

The victim, after hearing about Mathews's previous conviction for outraging public decency, became increasingly fearful for her safety and the safety of other children, prompting her to report the matter to the police.

It was also revealed during the proceedings that Brian Mathews had a prior conviction for indecent exposure dating back to 1986, indicating a troubling pattern of behavior.

The court was informed that the allegations and evidence had only recently surfaced, leading to the charges being brought against him.

Judge John Roberts, presiding over the case, emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society, especially young girls.

In his sentencing remarks, he stated that, in the interest of public safety and to prevent further offenses, he would impose a probation order on Mathews for a period of three years.

The judge explained that such an order was more appropriate than immediate imprisonment, highlighting that it served both the interests of the individual and society.

Additionally, Brian Mathews was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years, a measure aimed at monitoring and preventing any future misconduct.

During the hearing, the defense attorney, Stephen McNally, pointed out that Mathews had already pleaded guilty to the charges and had taken steps toward rehabilitation, including seeking help from a psychotherapist and support groups.

McNally also mentioned that Mathews's employer regarded him as a person of professional integrity, and a letter of support from his partner’s mother was presented in his favor.

Overall, the case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the judicial system to address and prevent sexual offenses, especially those involving minors.

The community of Newton, where Mathews resides, is now left to grapple with the implications of this case and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from harm.
