BRIAN MACLENNAN FROM OBAN SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL MESSAGE SCANDAL IN OBAN
A man named Brian MacLennan has been officially registered as a sex offender following his admission to sending a series of sexually explicit messages to a teenage boy. The incident originated when the boy, who was on holiday in the town of Oban, discovered a phone number written on the wall of a supermarket toilet. The graffiti also included a message suggesting that sexual encounters could be arranged by contacting that number. Curious and perhaps seeking connection, the boy sent a text message to the number, asking whether the person was 'into guys' or identified as gay. This initial contact marked the beginning of a disturbing exchange that would unfold over the next 14 hours.During this period, Brian MacLennan, aged 48, responded to the boy’s message with a series of 143 increasingly graphic and explicit text messages. The boy, in turn, replied with a similar number of messages, creating a prolonged and troubling communication. The situation came to light when the boy’s older brother accessed his phone and discovered the messages, prompting them to alert the police authorities in Oban.
MacLennan, who resides at Caravan 3, Barranrioch Farm, Glencruitten, Oban, was brought before Oban Sheriff Court to face the charges. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that MacLennan had initially denied placing his phone number on the toilet wall, leading to a deferred sentence while background reports were prepared. However, he later admitted that he had indeed invited contact by leaving his number in such a manner.
In addition to the registration on the sex offenders list, Sheriff Ruth Anderson imposed a two-year supervision order on MacLennan, which includes mandatory counseling. The court emphasized the importance of his full cooperation with health professionals involved in his rehabilitation. Sheriff Anderson warned MacLennan that failure to engage positively with mental health and social services could result in imprisonment. She also highlighted that ongoing monitoring would take place, with a review scheduled in three months to assess his progress and compliance.
Furthermore, the court stressed that MacLennan’s willingness to cooperate and participate in recommended programs was crucial for his future. The sentence reflects a serious stance on such conduct, underscoring the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and ensuring offenders are held accountable for their actions in the community of Oban.
