DUP REINSTATES SEX OFFENDER BRIAN HUTCHINSON IN ARMAGH
In a recent scandal, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in Northern Ireland has quietly re-admitted Brian Hutchinson, a self-confessed sex abuser, into its ranks. Hutchinson, a 42-year-old fruit farmer from Woodview, Co Armagh, was elected as the party treasurer for Armagh despite having sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl over a period of more than a year.Hutchinson, who is married and the father of five children, previously resigned from the DUP in 2002 after his abusive actions became public. However, recent revelations by the Sunday Life newspaper indicate that he has since rejoined the party and now holds a prominent role controlling party finances.
A DUP spokesperson stated, “The Party acted on this matter in 2002. Mr Hutchinson withdrew from the party and his council position. In 2008 he rejoined the party and is the current treasurer of our Armagh branch. The Party will be making no further comment on this matter.”
Hutchinson, whose late father Dougie was a founding member of the DUP and once a close aide to Ian Paisley, was expelled from the party in September 2002 after his abuse was exposed. Following his resignation, he received a police caution for indecent assault—an acknowledgment of guilt—and was registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.
Remarkably, Hutchinson was elected as the DUP treasurer for Armagh only a year after his removal from the sex offenders’ list. He has since defended himself by asking for the matter to be put to rest, stating, “I’ve paid for it and came clean in 2002. That’s all I want to say on my feelings about what happened back then. It had a big effect on me and my family and forced me to do some big thinking.”
Despite initial claims that “no sex took place,” it was later revealed that Hutchinson had engaged in persistent groping of his young victim for over a year before being confronted. The abuse surfaced when the girl finally gathered enough courage to tell her mother.
After the allegations came to light, Hutchinson resumed his role managing his sizeable nursery business in Co Armagh, which he continues to operate. He had served on Armagh council for nine years before resigning amid these controversies.
