SON BRUTALLY ATTACKS ELDERLY PARENTS WHILE DRUNK AND IS JAILED FOR FOUR YEARS
On March 29, Brett Keohane, aged 39, assaulted his elderly parents at their residence in Tonyrefail. The defendant had consumed alcohol prior to the incident and claimed to have no memory of what occurred.
During court proceedings, it emerged that Keohane had grabbed his mother around her neck and punched her in the head, before attacking his father when he tried to intervene.
His parents stated their desire to never see him again.
Prosecutor Tom Roberts explained that Keohane eventually stopped his violence but then launched into a lengthy rant, expressing a loss of respect for his father and asserting his innocence.
Witnesses included Keohane's son, who saw his grandfather punched roughly ten times.
As a consequence of the assault, Mrs Keohane sustained a cut on her right cheek requiring stitches, along with bruises and cuts on her hands.
Mr Keohane suffered lumps, bumps, and a cut on his right ear and injuries to his head.
After the attack, Keohane left the scene riding a bicycle.
Police later found him on the grounds of the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant after he called out to officers.
When asked if they were taking him to a mental health unit, he cycled away but was eventually located and taken into custody.
During the arrest, officers discovered multiple knives and a camping saw on him.
Keohane admitted to drinking alcohol and acknowledged that he had done something wrong.
He pleaded guilty to charges of wounding, assault causing actual bodily harm, and four counts of possessing bladed articles.
He had a previous conviction for wounding with a knife.
In her victim impact statement, Mrs Keohane expressed her inability to understand her son's actions, describing her fear and feeling she was close to death.
She also reflected on her surprise at his severe mental health issues.
Mr Keohane voiced feelings of disgust and sadness over his son's violence toward him and his wife.
The defense argued that Keohane could not remember the attack due to intoxication and that he needed mental health support.
The sentencing judge characterized the assault as an unprovoked, alcohol-fueled, vicious, and prolonged attack, emphasizing the terror inflicted and the harm to family bonds.
Keohane was sentenced to four years in prison, with an additional year on license, and will serve two-thirds of the sentence before parole eligibility.
An indefinite restraining order was also issued to keep him away from his parents.
