CONTROLLING RAPIST JAILED
A man convicted of a violent sexual assault and controlling behaviour has been sentenced to prison.Brett Carnelley and the female victim started a relationship in October 2022 after connecting online.
By May 2023, messages and emails revealed Carnelley was becoming increasingly possessive, jealous, and controlling.
On 10 October 2023, the woman visited Carnelley at his workshop in Sneinton, Nottingham, after he claimed he was battling mental health issues.
She discovered him in a state of intoxication, after which he subjected her to a brutal rape that was both violent and degrading.
Following the assault, Carnelley continued to send numerous messages and posted abusive content on social media, trying to control her interactions and movements.
The woman disclosed the incident to her neighbour in January 2025, prompting police investigation.
She received support and courageously shared her experience with specially trained officers.
Carnelley, aged 37 and of no fixed address, was arrested and charged but denied the allegations.
A jury found him guilty of rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and stalking.
At Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, 23 March, he was sentenced to a total of 17 years and one month in prison.
His sentence includes 12 years and one month of actual imprisonment, followed by five years on parole.
An indefinite restraining order was also issued against him.
