BRANDEN O’DONNELL CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL SHOCKS DERRY: FORMER COUNCIL MANAGER SENTENCED

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Derry, Brendan O’Donnell, a 78-year-old former senior manager with Derry City Council, has been sentenced in connection with serious allegations of child abuse spanning over a decade. The offences, which only came to light in 2013, involve the sexual assault of two young boys dating back to the early 1960s and mid-1970s.

O’Donnell, residing at 20, Ardglen Park in Derry, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault on males. The first set of allegations pertains to incidents that occurred between September 1962 and September 1965, involving a boy aged between 9 and 11 years old. The victim recounted that O’Donnell had taken him into his bedroom on multiple occasions, where he was subjected to sexual abuse. The second victim, who was between 11 and 12 years old at the time, described a single incident in which O’Donnell took him into a garage, showed him a pornographic magazine, and then assaulted him.

These disturbing revelations only surfaced in 2013, decades after the alleged offences took place. The case was brought before Derry Crown Court, where the court heard that the offences were committed during the 1960s and 1970s, a period when O’Donnell was in a position of trust and authority.

During the proceedings, O’Donnell’s defence lawyer, Mr. Brian McCartney, emphasized that no violence or threats had been used during the assaults. He also highlighted two significant issues: the considerable age difference between the victims and O’Donnell, and the breach of trust inherent in such offences committed by someone in a position of authority.

Judge Donna McColgan, presiding over the case, acknowledged that O’Donnell had admitted to his offending behaviour. She noted that the defendant had told a probation officer, “I couldn’t plead not guilty I knew I did it and I couldn’t add further to the turmoil in their lives.” The judge described the offences as a “serious breach of trust” and pointed out that O’Donnell had pleaded guilty at a relatively late stage in the proceedings.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge McColgan sentenced O’Donnell to 24 months in prison. However, considering the impact this would have on his wife, whom he cared for, she decided to suspend the sentence for three years. This decision reflects the complex nature of the case, balancing justice with compassion.

Earlier in January 2015, O’Donnell had also admitted to the charges, which involved indecently assaulting two boys during the 1960s and 1970s. The first victim was assaulted between September 1962 and September 1965, when he was aged between nine and 11. The second victim was assaulted between September 1973 and February 1975, when he was between 11 and 12. The guilty pleas were entered immediately after a jury was sworn in at Derry Crown Court to try the case.

Sentencing was deferred to allow for the preparation of a probation pre-sentence report, victim impact statements, and additional psychiatric and medical reports concerning O’Donnell’s health. The case is scheduled to be revisited on February 20, and O’Donnell remains on bail during this period, continuing to be subject to legal restrictions as the investigation and sentencing process unfolds.
