BRIXTON SHOPKEEPER SENTENCED TO 9 YEARS FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
Police are appealing for any victims of a now-convicted rapist to come forward.Bernard Williams, aged 77, also known as 'Papa B', has been sentenced to nine years after being found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault.
The victim reported Williams in January 2021, claiming she had been raped at her home after visiting Williams' shop, ‘Original Products’ on Market Row, to seek a spiritual healing treatment after feeling unwell.
Williams convinced her there was a spirit inside her that could kill her, and claimed he could 'heal' her using spiritual methods.
She bought a guard ring and healing bath from Williams, and her family paid over £13,000 for subsequent spiritual 'exorcisms' to rid her of spirits.
Despite their efforts, Williams insisted that sex was necessary to remove the demons, which led to him uninvitedly visiting her home on January 12, 2021, where he sexually assaulted and raped her.
He continued to stay in contact with her afterwards, claiming that the spirit had not been expelled.
Williams had run his shop for 30 years, and authorities believe he may have exploited others similarly, given his respected position within the community and his visits to the homes of other shoppers.
Detectives describe his offending as shocking, noting that he abused the trust of his community and may have more victims.
They urge anyone affected to contact the police, as there could be others who have yet to come forward.
The investigation was supported by police and relevant support organizations, emphasizing that victims should seek help and know they are not alone.
