BENJAMIN WALDRON SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES IN HAVERHILL AND IPSWICH
In a significant legal case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Haverhill, Benjamin Waldron, aged 37, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 13 years after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving young boys.The conviction was handed down at Ipswich Crown Court following a detailed trial that revealed the extent of Waldron's criminal conduct.
Waldron, who resides on Strawberry Fields in Haverhill, was found guilty by a jury earlier this month on nine counts related to sexual offences.
The court, however, acquitted him of three additional charges.
The judge presiding over the case, Judge John Holt, emphasized the gravity of Waldron's crimes during the sentencing, stating, “These offences were extremely serious.” Despite maintaining a stance of not guilty throughout the trial, Waldron admitted to his offending when questioned by a probation officer after the jury's verdicts were announced.
This admission was considered a significant factor in the court's decision to impose a 13-year sentence.
Legal representative Michael Proctor, speaking on behalf of Waldron, highlighted that his client had been a victim of abuse during his own childhood.
Proctor argued that Waldron’s offences against the two boys involved were opportunistic rather than premeditated or involving intimidation.
He also pointed out that Waldron was forthcoming about his actions during the probation interview, which he described as a sign of remorse and responsibility.
The court's findings detailed that Waldron was convicted of five counts of sexual assault on a male child, one count of inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of raping a male child under the age of 13.
The offences primarily involved the same young boy, with the exception of one of the rape charges.
Waldron was found not guilty of two additional allegations of indecent assault and one of rape.
The trial revealed that the abusive conduct took place over a period of five years, beginning in 2003.
In addition to his prison sentence, Waldron was subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, which aims to restrict his contact with minors and prevent further offending.
The case has brought to light the disturbing nature of Waldron’s actions and the ongoing efforts of the justice system to protect vulnerable children from such predators.
