BEN TAYLOR FROM GREENWICH SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG LEFT TO SUFFER WITH TERMINAL CANCER
Ben Daniel Taylor, a resident of Greenwich, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to his beloved dog, Bozo, a 10-year-old mastiff. The heartbreaking case highlights the tragic neglect and poor decision-making that led to the animal enduring prolonged pain and suffering.Bozo was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer in early 2020, a diagnosis confirmed through x-rays that also indicated the cancer had likely spread to his lungs. Despite being advised by veterinary professionals that the cancer was extremely painful and that normal activity could cause fractures due to the weakened state of his bones, Taylor refused to consider euthanasia. Instead, he requested a second opinion from a specialist surgeon, which resulted in Bozo being discharged with medication and a referral for further treatment. However, Taylor subsequently canceled the appointment, choosing not to pursue additional care for his suffering pet.
On May 20, 2020, Taylor contacted his veterinarian to report that Bozo’s condition had worsened and arranged for him to be euthanized. Despite this, he failed to attend the scheduled appointment or administer prescribed medication, leaving Bozo to endure increasing pain and deterioration. The situation reached a critical point on June 15, when Bozo was brought into an animal hospital in a severely emaciated state. The veterinary team described him as collapsed, unable to walk, lying on his right side, and showing signs of severe depression and unresponsiveness. His body condition was rated at just 1 out of 5, with bones of the spine, pelvis, ribs, shoulder blades, and skull prominently visible, and he weighed only 40.8 kilograms.
The veterinarian noted that Bozo’s heart rate was elevated, his breathing was abnormal, and his leg was swollen and ulcerated with a foul smell. The decision was made to euthanize him immediately. X-rays taken post-mortem revealed complete destruction of the bones in his lower leg, with the tumor having advanced significantly. The police seized Bozo’s body, which was subsequently examined at the Royal Veterinary College. The post-mortem confirmed the presence of a malignant bone tumor originating in his leg and spreading to multiple bones, including the ribs and vertebrae, as well as the lungs. A bacterial infection was also identified.
The report concluded that both the tumor and bacterial infection would have caused considerable pain and suffering over several months. The magistrates described Taylor as a well-meaning but ultimately incompetent dog owner, whose delay in euthanasia resulted in unnecessary and prolonged agony for Bozo. RSPCA inspector James Whipps emphasized that veterinary evidence indicated Bozo had been suffering for months, with his condition worsening as time went on. He stressed the importance of making humane decisions to prevent animals from enduring unnecessary pain, noting that Taylor’s failure to act in Bozo’s best interests was a grave mistake.
In sentencing, the magistrates imposed a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with a fine of £628 to cover costs and charges. Additionally, Taylor received a one-year ban from owning animals, underscoring the court’s condemnation of his neglect and the suffering inflicted upon Bozo.
