BEN BARRETT FROM LLANDILO CAUGHT WITH MORE CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND BANNED MOBILE PHONE IN CARMARTHENSHIRE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Llandeilo, Ben Stephen Thomas Barrett, a man with a troubling criminal history, was found to be in possession of additional indecent images of children at his residence. The incident occurred during a routine police check linked to a sexual harm prevention order that Barrett was previously subject to.Ben Barrett, aged 28 and residing at Maes y Farchnad in Llandeilo, appeared before Llanelli Magistrates’ Court to face multiple serious charges. He pleaded guilty to breaching the terms of his existing order by owning a mobile phone equipped with a camera, a device he was explicitly prohibited from possessing since the order was issued at Swansea Crown Court on August 15, 2016. The breach was identified as occurring between August 2016 and March of the following year.
The court was informed that Barrett’s violations extended beyond mere possession. On March 24 of the previous year, he admitted to creating an indecent photograph of a child, classified as Category B, which indicates a severe level of abuse. Additionally, he confessed to producing another indecent image of a child, this time categorized as Category C, on January 16 of the same year. The categorization from A to C reflects the severity, with Category A representing the most extreme forms of sexual exploitation.
Further charges revealed that Barrett also possessed a prohibited image of a child, which he admitted to on January 20 of the previous year. All these offences were committed at his home in Llandeilo, as confirmed during the court proceedings.
Prosecutor Abul Hussein detailed the police operation, stating, “Police attended the defendant’s residence for a routine check as part of the enforcement of the prevention order and due to his prior offending history. During the visit, Barrett was found in possession of a mobile phone with a camera, which he was not allowed to have under the terms of his order.”
He added, “The police seized the device, which was found to contain internet search references for ‘rape’ among other disturbing terms. Further analysis uncovered two indecent images, one in Category B and another in Category C, along with an additional photo retrieved from the phone.”
Judge David Parsons emphasized the gravity of the case, noting that Barrett’s previous conviction for similar offences and his breach of a court order warranted serious consideration. The court was told that the offences demonstrated a clear pattern of offending behavior.
Defense solicitor Peter Rhys Jones attempted to provide some context, stating, “My client claims that the phone was purchased before his conviction in 2016.” However, given the severity of the offences, no mitigation was deemed appropriate at this stage.
Barrett was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to return to Swansea Crown Court on February 23 for sentencing.
Earlier in July 2016, Barrett had already admitted to possessing a large collection of child abuse images and videos. During that hearing, he pleaded guilty to nine charges related to the possession of 57 videos and 470 images of children, which were stored on his home computer and mobile device.
Police investigations revealed that when they confiscated Barrett’s computer on October 21, 2016, they discovered ten Category A videos, 29 Category B videos, and 18 Category C videos. The device also contained four Category A images, ten Category B images, 275 Category C images, and an additional 55 uncategorized images of children. His mobile phone held four prohibited images and 122 Category C images.
The categorization system, from A to C, underscores the severity of the content, with Category A representing the most extreme abuse. Due to the seriousness of these offences, Barrett was committed to Swansea Crown Court for sentencing, with a scheduled appearance on July 22.
These cases highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the importance of strict enforcement of court orders designed to prevent further harm. The community remains vigilant as authorities continue to pursue justice in these disturbing cases.
